About Bitcoin

The world’s first cryptocurrency, Bitcoin is stored and exchanged securely on the internet through a digital ledger known as a blockchain. Bitcoins are divisible into smaller units known as satoshis — each satoshi is worth 0.00000001 bitcoin.

Bitcoin (BTC) is a decentralized cryptocurrency that was first described in a 2008 whitepaper by an individual or group of individuals using the alias Satoshi Nakamoto. Officially launched in January 2009, Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer online currency that allows transactions to happen directly between equal and independent network participants without the need for any intermediary. Bitcoin is digital money that cannot be inflated or manipulated by any individual, company, government, or central bank. Bitcoin is recognized as one of the initial cryptocurrencies to come into use and has inspired the development of thousands of competing projects. There will only ever be 21 million BTC. Bitcoin is highly divisible, with its smallest unit, i.e. 0.000 000 01 BTC, called a "satoshi" or "sat." As bitcoin's value has risen, its easy divisibility has become a key attribute.

Market update: Bitcoin hit a new all-time high as markets continue to surge

Market update: Bitcoin hit a new all-time high as markets continue to surge

COINBASE BYTES • MAR 18, 2024

Bitcoin notched another all-time high north of $73K. Meanwhile, BTC ETF inflows kept on setting records. Here’s what you need to know.
BlackRock’s BTC ETF reached $10 billion in record time. Less than two months after spot BTC ETFs launched in the U.S. on January 11, BlackRock’s IBIT product — the biggest ETF after Grayscale’s GBTC — has crossed the $10 billion mark faster than any ETF in history.
2024 inflows into crypto investment products are on track to break records. Here’s just one notable example: Across all of 2021 (when crypto markets last peaked), inflows to crypto investment products totalled $10.6 billion, according to CoinShares. In a little over two months this year, inflows have already totaled $10.3 billion.
U.K. regulator opens the door to crypto exchange-traded products. On Monday, the U.K.’s Financial Conduct Authority said it would allow cryptocurrency products to be traded on exchanges. As CNBC reports, “Specifically, the FCA said it would not object to requests from recognized investment exchanges to create a U.K.-listed market segment for crypto-backed exchange-traded notes, or ETNs.”
Market update: Crypto markets start the week red, but traders are still optimistic

Market update: Crypto markets start the week red, but traders are still optimistic

COINBASE BYTES • MAR 27, 2024

Crypto markets pulled back to start the week. Despite the correction, traders are still sending bullish signals.
Why were prices down this week? Declines of 15% or higher after new all-time highs are typical for BTC, as markets adjust downward after traders sell for a profit. Similar pullbacks also took place after new highs both in 2017 and 2021, before BTC ultimately continued its climb.
Bitcoin ETFs attracted a record-breaking $2.5 billion last week. The latest inflows — which marked the second straight week of $2 billion-plus in inflows — eclipsed the previous high-water mark of $2.3 billion from mid-February. Out of thousands of ETFs that trade in the U.S., BlackRock’s and Fidelity’s spot BTC products both rank in the top five for year-to-date inflows.
Investment advisors could lead the next wave of demand for bitcoin. Professional investment advisers have long wanted an easy way for their clients to access bitcoin, according to polls — which they now have in the form of the spot BTC ETFs. In the coming months, a wave of other firms is expected to follow suit, according to CoinShares Head of Research James Butterfill.
